Apprentices make sandwell

At the launch of the Sandwell Story earlier this year, Sandwell Council committed to 100 new apprenticeships by 2026.

Over the summer they ran a local campaign to help explore the stories about what being an apprentice with the council is all about. Helping applicants see the range of apprenticeships available and sharing the stories from apprentices in different roles, led to over 1300 applications in just a few weeks. More than 50 roles have already been offered with ongoing recruitment.

Apprenticeships available under the new 100 Apprentices programme include Customer Service, Business Administration, Carpentry, IT, Early Years, Marketing, Horticulture, Housing/Property, Adult Social Care, Human Resources, Plumbing and Gas Central Heating, Painting and Motor Vehicle.

Sandwell Council was named as one of the Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers 2025, one of only four local authorities nationally to achieve this ranking. It has started more than 1,100 people on apprenticeship programmes since 2017, with more than 650 new entrants to the council and have ranged from ages 16-62.

Meet Eshaan, Claire and Danielle, three apprentices who took part in the campaign this summer.

Brandon helped to launch the Sandwell Story – Making It campaign in the summer, sharing his story into his apprenticehip.

The success of the campaign also led to Sandwell’s apprentices being invited to be part of a national campaign from the Local Government Association, to promote working in local authorities. See Eshaan and Leshanae tell their stories in the national LGA campaign below.
