Sounds of Sandwell

When it comes to music, what’s the scene, the sounds, the successes and stories of Sandwell?

Our six proud towns celebrate their unity and thrive through their unique identities, culturally rich and diverse populations, steeped in stories.

From the Smethwick Musical Society (1888-1969), to the pioneering techno collective Sandwell District (a record label and multinational collective of DJs and producers 2002-2011), the sounds of Sandwell have continued to be influenced by its communities, culture and ambitions.

Events big and small

From some of the biggest events for music genres in Europe, to free events bringing music into the community, Sandwell is connected through music.

Sandwell & Birmingham Mela, Victoria Park, Smethwick: the Mela here is Europe’s largest South Asian music festival, welcoming over 30,000 attendees every year. Get set for this summer – scheduled for 26 July 2026.

Bearwood Shuffle, Lightwoods Park, Smethwick: A free, family-friendly festival is coming back to Lightwoods Park again this summer, bringing music, food, local craft talent, and activities for all ages.

Music events across our libraries: yes that’s right, sometimes libraries are full of noise! Free events are being held at libraries across Sandwell bringing a host of music talent into the community. Check Visit Sandwell for your nearest event.

SHAPE Your Talent is back for 2026 too. A talent competition for young people aged 8-19 (or up to age 25 for young people with additional needs), who live, work, or are educated in Sandwell. Applications are open up to the 13th March and auditions take place over March across Sandwell. Finalists go on to perform for a chance to win £500.

Making it in Music

We heard Madi’s story when we launched the Sandwell Story, a singer songwriter who’s building her sound and voice and has been played on BBC Radio 1’s introducing. She talks about how Smethwick has shaped her sound and is part of her identity as an artist.

Another success story is HUSSY, from West Bromwich. He’s recently shared his story on breaking onto BBC Radio 1 Dance with five shows over the festive period, with more plans to come along with gigs across the UK and overseas this year. He says “where you’re from isn’t something

Sandwell is also home to Shireland CBSO Academy, an inclusive secondary school in West Bromwich – the first state school in Britain to be established in partnership with an orchestra, The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

Eternal Taal, the first UK female Bhangra entertainment team was established by Parv Kaur. Born and bred in Smethwick, she pursued her career as a lecturer in Computer Science but couldn’t ignore her passion for Indian drumming, setting up her group in 1999. Having performed for the Royal Family, House of Commons, at Glastonbury, in Bollywood films and for crowds around the world, her story is inspiring – read it here on TikTok.
